Mike Debruykere coach of George Cross in 1968.
Sunshine George Cross is saddened to hear of the passing of former coach Sjel ' Mike' De Bruykere.
The former Dutch international arrived in Melbourne in the mid 1950's and joined Wilhelmina where he was instrumental in making them one of Victoria's leading teams of that era. Mike was one of Holland's leading players before coming to Australia and was a regular in the Dutch National team between 1952 and 1955. He joined Willem 11 of Tilberg and helped the club to two first division championships. He remained a very popular figure at Willem 11 with the club naming a grandstand after him. Mike's association with George Cross came as a coach in 1968 and returning to the club for a second time in 1975. No matter where he played or coached Mike De Bruykere was always keen to succeed, but always retained a sence of sportsmanship. Mike had his son Ben play with our juniors and also the reserve team. Sjel 'Mike' Debruykere was born in 1928. Sunshine George Cross pass on their condolences to the De Bruykere family on their sad loss.
