FIRST UP WIN AT NEW HOME GROUND

The long awaited 2010 Premier League season kicked off in fine style for Sunshine George Cross with the new look team recording a 3-2 win over Heidelberg United. Playing the first home game at the new home venue in Somers Street, the Georgies made very impressive start considering Andy O'Dell introduced eight new players into the starting line up. Only Martin John, Chris Konstas and Fidell Richards remained from the team of 2009. The 3-2 score line is not a true indication of the Georgies supremecy in this match as the Red & Whites dominated for long periods and created the more and better chances than the visitors. The Georgies went on the attack from the start and took the lead after 22 minutes through new captain Fidel Richards. Heidelberg's plight worsened after 25 minutes when Joe Kozic elbowed Barry Devlin in front of the referee and was showen the red card. After 30 minutes Sunshine went 2-0 up when new comer Kyle Joryeff broke clear and calmly slotted the ball home to score on his debut. Heideberg responded and it took a spectacular Martin John save from a Osagie Edararo's free kick that denied the Bergers. The visitors pulled a goal back after 38 minutes when Sunshine's goalkeeper Martin John appeared to be interfered with as he tried to catch a floated free kick. John lost possession of the ball and play was waved on for Ederaro to scramble the ball over the line. The Georgies withstood some early Heidelberg pressure in the second half as the game opened up. To their credit Heidelberg continued to attack depite playing with only 10 players, but as the game progresse hugew gaps began to appear in their defence. The Georgies midfield led by Barry Devlin was in control and looked manacing in attack. Kyle Joryeff saw his header hit the outside of the post after good lead up play, and not long after James Balckburn should have put the game to bed. The substitute found himself in a great goal scoring position, but headed the ball straight into the arms of Steve Tilovski in the Heidelberg goals. The Georgies pressure told in the 74 minute when another substitute Stuart Nicholson beat the offside trap to slot home the third goal. The home team looked set to run away with the game with the Heidelberg defence all over the place. The Georgies failed to take advantage of he opportunites and was Heidelberg who grabbed a consolation in the 88 minute. Following a long throw-in, two Sunshine defenders went for the same ball and only managed to deflected the ball past the stranded Martin John, to give the Georgie camp an anxious last five minutes. Sunshine was able to hold out Heidelberg to record an impressive first up win at their new home ground in North Sunshine.

UNDER 21: SUNSHINE GEORGE CROSS 1 HEIDELBERG UNITED 2 Goal scorer: Peter Koutsoupias. Heidelberg United scored a 2-1 win over our youngster in the curtain raiser. Heidelberg was the more determined team in the first half and took advantage of the strong wind at their backs to open the scoring with a long range drive. The Georgies thought they had equalised but Andrew Nabbout goal was disallowed for off-side. The Georgies managed to draw level through Peter Koutsoupias in hard fought contest. Heidelberg regained the lead just before the break with what was to be the winning goal. Sunshine tried to get back on level terms, but last season's champions held out the Georgies in the second half to run out winners.
