Goal Scorer: Ben Cogger (80)
The winning goal for the Georgies was scored in the 80th minute from substitute Ben Cogger who celebrated his first goal for the club with great joy. Cogger was first to re-act to a long free kick from Luke Grounds from well inside the Georgies half of the ground. The ball glanced off the head of a Northcote defender with Cogger running into the penalty area to slip the ball past the Northcote keeper. The Georgies held the upper hand throughout this contest, but both teams failed to get any cohesion in attack. Sunshine dropped midfielder Barry Devlin into defence in place of Michael Sacks who was released by the club during the week. Matthew Cini and Trent Waterson had to sit out this match after failing to get over their injuries. Northcote's striker Trent Rixon was fit but coach Peter Tsolakis decided to play him off the bench. The first half was a non event with defenders well on top and neither keeper being seriously tested. The highlight of a poor quality first half was the run and centre by Kyle Joryeff from the left that James Blackburn headed narrowly over the bar. Blackburn went close again just before the break with his header once again going over the bar. The standard improved in the second half with the home team pushing forward at every opportunity and Northcote quite happy to sit back and absorb the pressure. Both coaches went to the bench with Trent Rixon coming on for Northcote while the Georgies introduced youngsters Andrew Nabbout and Evan Christodoulou. Northcote seemed content with a point but were punished when the Georgies took the lead with only 10 minutes remaining. Sunshine had a great opportunity to make it 2-0 when striker Stuart Nicholson burst through but his shot was saved by Christopher Theodoriris-Petropoulos. Northcote came out of their shell in the final 10 minutes and for the first time in the match looked threathening. The visitors had a golden opportunity to draw level at the 90th minute mark Northcote cut open the Georgies defence. The build up play left Trent Rixon one on one with Martin John, but the Georgie keeper came out on top with a great save. The Georgies were relieved to hear the final whistle and earn 3 valuable points, while Northcote must be rueing the approach they adopted for long periods in this game. Sunshine Georgies once again had Martin John to thank for all 3 points with his saves late in the match, and Fidell Richards in midfield who had an outstanding display in midfield. His work rate was extrra-ordinary. Youngsters Evan Christodoulou and Andrew Nabbout injected pace and new life into the team when they came on in the second half. UNDER 21: SUNSHINE GEORGE CROSS 3 NORTHCOTE CITY 1. Scorers; Robert Schiafone, Daniel Sweeney 2. It was anything but easy for the Georgies against Northcote City as the the 3-1 score line might indicate. Northcote held the upper hand for long periods and looked dangerous with every attack. The visitors took the lead with a clever goal and the Georgies equalised before the break with a freak of a goal by Robert Sciafone. Northcote's keeper miscalculated Schiafone's mis-kick and let the ball drop under the cross-bar and into the net. It was anyone's game in the second half with both teams attacking at will. It was a case of who would take their chances and up stepped Daniel Sweeney with two well taken goals to seal a great victory for Sunshine George Cross. Why do player take it out on corner flags when they score a goal?
